DnD Misty Step Demystified: Can You Cast Misty Step and Another Spell on the Same Turn?

A wizard casts Misty Step in DnD 5e as a Bonus Action.

Misty Step DnD 5e Answers: Can You Cast Another Spell as an Action on the Same Turn?

Summary

You can cast Misty Step and a spell with a casting time of one Action, as long as that spell is a Cantrip.

In DnD 5e,(and One DnD so far), when a spell is cast using a Bonus Action, the only other spell that can be cast on the same turn must be a Cantrip that requires an action, as per the rules on Bonus Action Casting Time (PHB p. 202). Therefore, if a character casts Misty Step using their Bonus Action, they can only cast a Cantrip that requires an action on the same turn, and cannot cast a non-Cantrip spell that requires an action.

It's worth noting that it doesn't matter in what order you cast Misty Step and a Cantrip. You can cast Misty Step first or a Cantrip first. Per the 5e Players Handbook, "You choose when to take a bonus action during your turn, unless the bonus action’s timing is specified, and anything that deprives you of your ability to take actions also prevents you from taking a bonus action."

About Misty Step

Misty Step is a popular 2nd-level conjuration spell in DnD 5e (and One DnD) that allows the caster to teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space they can see. This spell provides great mobility options for characters in combat, allowing them to get out of harm's way, move closer to enemies, or reposition themselves for better tactical advantage.

Other FAQs About Misty Step

If You Are in Melee Combat, Does Casting Misty Step Trigger an Opportunity Attack?

No, the opponent does not get an opportunity attack when you cast Misty Step. It is a teleportation spell that does not require you to move through the opponent's threatened area. Opportunity attacks are triggered when a creature leaves a threatened area, but Misty Step allows you to teleport instantly to an unoccupied space that you can see within range, bypassing the need to physically move away from the opponent.

Can You Use the Quickened Spell Metamagic Option to Cast Misty Step as a Bonus Action and then Cast Another Spell Using Their Regular Action on the Same Turn?

No. Quickened Spell allows a spell with a casting time of one action to be cast as a bonus action instead, but it doesn't change the fact that the caster has already used their bonus action to cast a spell, limiting their options for casting another spell on the same turn.
